Anger. A basic human emotion, experienced by everyone, yet expressed in vastly and wildly different ways. What sparks and develops anger in one person might leave another completely unmoved.

Anger is a general term for feeling displeasure. Every language has its own word for it. However, not every single language differentiates anger intensities by a number of distinctive words that are actively used by native speakers in real-time conversations.

Expanding your anger vocabulary can empower you to articulate your feelings more clearly and constructively. Here are seven English words for types of anger:

  1. Annoyance: a mild type of anger. Being (briefly) bothered by something or someone that usually negatively impacts the person’s state or process.

  2. Irritation: a mild type of anger. A more physically uncomfortable and longer feeling of annoyance. The person could start to visibly show and express their displeasure.

  3. Frustration: a mild type of anger. An emotional response to something or someone that stops the person’s state or process. The person feels angry and disappointed for being unable to proceed.

  4. Anger: the most general definition of feeling strong displeasure. A reaction to injustice or wrong that’s often expressed through body language, a shift in voice, choice of words, and other indicators.

  5. Rage: a high-intensity type of anger. Losing control over reason and patience through overwhelmingly intense anger. A frenzy of anger with possible aggression, high volume expression, and trembling.

  6. Fury: a high-intensity type of anger. Fury is an uncontrollable and violent tornado of anger that’s often persistent and destructive. It is a more lasting and extreme level of rage.

  7. Wrath: a judgmental type of absolute anger that desires divergence. Wrath is commonly used as anger with the moral goal of punishment and divine transformation.

Embracing this vocabulary not only aids personal growth but also enhances relationships with others.
